For two vibrant weeks, the Kansas City Music Hall was home to the magic of The Lion King. The Broadway sensation lit up the stage with its stunning visuals, unforgettable music, and powerful storytelling. Audiences from across the city filled the theater each night, but this year’s engagement had an extra touch.

The production coincided with the Destination Imagination Global Finals, which brought over 15,000 students from around the world to Kansas City. These young innovators came to compete in STEM challenges and explore creativity on a global stage. Hundreds of students had the opportunity to attend the May 22 matinee, many of them using a special group discount arranged just for the event. The following day, around 350 to 400 students attended a private Q&A with members of The Lion King cast and crew.

During the session, students heard directly from the actors portraying Scar and Nala, as well as the puppet master, assistant stage manager, and others who help bring the show to life. Their insights into the production offered a rare and exciting glimpse behind the curtain. This special event came together thanks to the generosity of The Lion King team, support from BAA and Music Hall, and coordination by the American Theatre Guild team—Jillian, Jenell, Emmy, and Amy S., who helped organize the group tickets.

The engagement also included outreach to local youth organizations that support children with disabilities. These groups were featured in the playbill and invited to attend performances and a cast talkback. The experience offered these kids a chance to connect with theatre in a meaningful way and sparked moments of joy and inspiration that left a lasting impact.

Messages of thanks began pouring in almost immediately. Families and organizations shared how much it meant to be included and to feel seen. The success of these efforts was a powerful reminder that kindness, patience, and empathy are essential in creating an environment where every audience member feels welcome.

Special thanks go to the Disney Theatrical team, and to Jillian and Taylor for their outstanding work. Every detail made a difference. The heart and care poured into this run of The Lion King will be remembered long after the final curtain call.
